And the winner is…

18 January 2015

So that was a busy and wondrous couple of weeks.  We’ve been locked in a room with a 1000 pieces of work, reviewing designs, votes, comments and the well-stuffed brown envelopes sent to us by several artists.

But we are now delighted to announce the winner from our first challenge.  Drum roll, etc…it is…

Winner of the $5000 Artist Accelerator Fund: Aoi Yoshizawa – PLATO.

It wasn’t an easy choice to make but it was an obvious choice… if that makes sense.  In PLATO, Aoi presented us with something bold, free and beautiful. Although a simple thought, using brush strokes and colour like this to form a compelling repeating design is deceptively difficult to achieve. Both us and the community loved PLATO for its evidence of humanity in a world of computer-made objects and design.

Aoi’s whole portfolio of submissions had a refreshing looseness that challenged the expectation of straight lines and smooth surfaces. With all this in mind our final choice had very little to do with our heads and everything to do with our hearts. We all just felt it was right – and surely that’s the response any good piece of art should illicit.

You can see the work, modeled behind our CD Oli Green, in the picture above.

We can’t wait to see PLATO in as many homes as possible.

See more of Aoi’s work here and here.

But that’s not all!  There were in fact several abundantly talented artists vying for the top spot.  And we were so blown away by the quality of their work, that we decided to offer a prize of commissions to 5 artists who were pipped at the post by Aoi.

We’ll be announcing them tomorrow, along with the full list of winners going into the Feathr.com shop.

Peace, love and wonder,

All the Feathr.com team.
