White architecture first came into vogue with the modernist buildings of the 1920s and, ever since, its been a staple in modern design. Against natural backdrops, nothing looks better than a crisp white facade – so we’ve chosen 5 of our favourites, matched to the best of our modern white wallpapers.
Mediterranean Villa by Sebastian Knorr
Sitting in Mallorca, Casa son Vida recalls the ogranic structures of Gaudi’s earlier work. Against the area’s more traditional colonial villas, this modern white building is a real stand out piece.
A companion piece for this building would be our modern white wallpaper, Aluminium Weed Field.
Desert House by Jim Jenning
Built in 2009, this cubist white building is pure rationalism. A true statement sitting in the wilds of the mountains near Palm Springs.
A companion piece for this building would be our modern white wallpaper, Department in Frost.
Oscar Niemeyer’s National Museum in Brasilia
Although this is one his more recent buildings (completed in 2006), the National Museum reflect the obsessions of Niemeyer’s career – curving shapes and white finishes.
A companion piece for this building would be our modern white wallpaper, Drawer in Monochrome.
Takeshi Hosaka’s Hoto Fudo
Sitting underneath Mount Fuji, this bulbous restaurant reflects the shapes of the mountain that lies behind it. The designers also created it to recall the white clouds that often surround Mount Fuji.
Le Corbusier’s Villa Savoye
Villa Savoye is one of the best known of Corbusier’s work, and has become an icon in its own right. The curves of the roof terrace and an organic feel to the cubist white shape.
