We are delighted to welcome London artist Hugh Hamshaw Thomas into the Feathr family. His first piece with us is the bucolic and romantic Swan wallpaper mural: an Arcadian scene influenced by the Toile De Jouy and Chinoiserie styles that hides a rich creative story.
Hamshaw Thomas trained at Central School of Arts & Crafts and Bath Academy of Art (Corsham) in the late 1970s and early 80s. Growing up in the countryside of Farnham, Surrey, schooling in Sussex and the rural surroundings of Corsham, Wiltshire imbued a strong sense of place in the landscape. Ideas of romantic melancolia, the bucolic and arcadian are suffused in much of his work.
In the 1990s he received critical acclaim for his large scale installations that categorised plastic flowers into pseudo botanical collections. These works explored ideas of mortality, trace and memory through discarded plastic flowers found in cemetery bins and charity shops.
The original Swan artwork is part of Hamshaw Thomas’ ongoing exploration of representation and memory through Landscape imagery. The artwork is based on a photograph taken on the edge of lake landscaped by Humphry Repton (1752-1818), who is often regarded as the successor to Capability Brown. The artwork presents itself as if it were a Toile de Jouy wallpaper or a Chinoiserie wallpaper seemingly of a similar period to the work undertaken by Repton.
By presenting the image duplicitously as a potograph in a style belonging to the decorative arts, Hamshaw Thomas fuses themes of romantic melancholia, the bucolic and Arcadian with his interest in layering of histories, narratives and remembrance.
We’ve worked with Hugh to make Swan available as a stunning wall mural, capturing the detail and depth of light of his original artwork. In extending and repeating the original artwork, we’ve also introduced a new layering of history and remembrance: a subtle Roscharch-like effect.
The Swan wallpaper mural is available in a range of colours including Charcoal, Blue, Rose, Lavender, Chestnut, Mist Grey and Vert. In Charcoal, smoky greys are set against a walnut brown background to create rich, warm tones that envelop you. In Blue, crisp deep blues coordinate with a tan background forming a well-balanced interiors colour palette.
Rose introduces deep pinks set against vintage taupe for a through and through romantic aesthetic. Vert brings together willow greens and soft creams for classic interiors palette. Also available are Chestnut and Mist Grey, both of which use tones of brown and monochrome to create subtle and flexible palettes to build rooms around.
The new Swan wallpaper mural is available both on residential and commercial substrates, from FEATHR.com or the FEATHR retail network. Prices start from £43/€49/$56 per square metre.
As with all FEATHR wallpapers, we are happy to discuss any custom design or colour preferences.
